Several mild tremors were felt across parts of Maharashtra’s Nashik district between Saturday morning and the early hours of Sunday. Officials said there were no reports of any loss of life or major damage to property, reported the PTI.
However, the Nashik district administration has stepped up monitoring and ordered inspections of vulnerable buildings as a precaution.
According to officials, the tremors were experienced in Surgana, Kalwan, Dindori and Peth talukas, the news agency reported.
The Maharashtra Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), based in Nashik district of Maharashtra, said that the tremors measured around 3.6 in magnitude.
The latest tremors were reported late on Saturday night and in the early hours of Sunday after initial seismic activity was recorded in Surgana on Saturday morning, according to the PTI.
Administration orders safety inspections
Nashik Collector Ayush Prasad said that authorities have instructed officials to inspect buildings that may be structurally unsafe, particularly in areas vulnerable to landslides, as per the PTI.
The administration is closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety and respond quickly if required, he said.
Officials said cracks have appeared in the walls of a government-run ashram school in Sarad village following the tremors.
Apart from this, no significant damage to public or private property has been reported.
Collector explains possible cause
Collector Prasad said western parts of Nashik district contain geological fault lines that can trigger such tremors.
He added that heavy rainfall may also have contributed by increasing underground pressure after rainwater seeped into the ground, the news agency reported.
According to the district collector, the recent activity is part of an earthquake swarm, where several small tremors occur over a period rather than one major earthquake, as per the PTI.
He said such tremors may continue for days, weeks or even longer in affected areas.
Residents advised to follow official guidance
The district administration has urged residents not to panic and to follow advisories issued by authorised government agencies.
Officials said the situation is being continuously monitored and there is currently no indication of any major seismic event, the news agency reported.
