Antulay expelled
A R ANTULAY, WHO defied the Congress (I) high command and filed his nomination papers as a rebel candidate from the Kolaba constituency, has been expelled from the party. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (I) president N M Kamble said the Raigad district unit had taken action in accordance with “standing instructions” from the high command. Antulay, however, described his expulsion as “inconsequential and irrelevant.”
Akademi awardees
WELL-KNOWN CLASSICAL vocalist Sharafat Hussain Khan is among the 15 people who have been selected for this year’s Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. The recipients of the award will be given Rs 10,000 each and a citation. In the fields of dance, music, and drama, the awardees are Sharafat Hussain Khan, Kishen Maharaj, Sudharani Raghupathy, Durga Lal, and Gulab Bai, among others.
Vajpayee’s warning
BHARATIYA JANATA Party president Atal Bihari Vajpayee warned against the criminalisation of politics and the politicisation of the police. He said the country was going downhill and it had to be stopped. Vajpayee blamed the government for the situation in Assam and Punjab. He alleged that trouble was encouraged by the government as it gave them a pretext to take over state administrations.
Rebels to withdraw
ALL REBEL CONGRESS-I candidates who do not withdraw from the contest by November 30 will be expelled from the party, said Sitaram Kesri. Prominent among the rebels who have filed nomination papers is B P Maurya, the Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party candidate from Aligarh. The Congress-I high command is hoping that better sense will prevail on the rebels and they will withdraw.
