Sanjana will make her Commonwealth Games debut in the women’s 77kg weightlifting event at Glasgow 2026. At just 19 years old, she is one of the youngest members of the Indian weightlifting team and heads into the Games after winning three bronze medals at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships.
Early days
Hailing from Haryana, Sanjana made a name for herself at a young age through impressive performances in national youth competitions before emerging as one of India’s brightest talents in the heavier weight categories.
Rise through the ranks
Sanjana first made her mark on the youth and junior circuit with impressive performances at both the national and international levels.
At the 2023 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Greater Noida, she won silver in the Youth Women’s 76kg category with a total lift of 198kg. She also claimed gold in the clean and jerk and silver in the snatch.
She continued her rise at the Khelo India Youth Games, where she broke her own national records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift in the girls’ 76kg category. She lifted a total of 206kg to clinch the gold medal.
Her consistent performances helped her transition to the senior level, where she began competing in the women’s 77kg category.
Achievements
Sanjana enjoyed early success by winning medals and breaking national records at the youth level before establishing herself on the senior international circuit.
She won silver medals at the 2024 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Doha before producing the biggest performance of her senior career at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar.
Competing in the women’s 77kg category, she registered a career-best total lift of 220kg, including 96kg in the snatch and 124kg in the clean and jerk. Her effort earned her three bronze medals – one each in the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall total.
Those performances also secured her place in India’s squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Eyes on Glasgow
The 19-year-old heads to Glasgow for her maiden Commonwealth Games appearance as one of India’s most promising young weightlifters.
After announcing herself on the senior international stage with three bronze medals at the Asian Weightlifting Championships, Sanjana will look to carry that momentum into Glasgow and challenge for a podium finish on her Commonwealth Games debut.
