A 28-year-old woman in Assam was allegedly raped by multiple men at knifepoint while she had gone out in the evening with her boyfriend. According to reports, the accused later extorted money from her.

The incident took place on February 19. The survivor lodged a complaint and a case was registered.

According to the FIR, at least seven men raped her one by one and then forced her to transfer Rs 10,000 to one of their accounts.

Family members said the woman was sitting in a car with her boyfriend on a bypass road a few kilometres from Silchar town when a group of men arrived in a Mahindra Thar and attacked them.

They allegedly questioned the couple about their whereabouts and suddenly grabbed them. Family members claimed that seven to eight men were present. Some held the boyfriend while the others raped the woman in front of him.

The case was registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station.

Arrests made

Police said the survivor identified two of the accused. Both were arrested by Sunday. They have been identified as Nilotpal Das, 25, and Subol Das, 27, residents of the Ashram Road area of Silchar.

Police said the survivor has undergone mandatory medical examination and her statement has been recorded.

The incident has sparked anger among citizens. Thousands of locals have posted about it on social media and demanded strict action against the accused.

Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev described the news as extremely disturbing. In a post on X, she said Assam’s Chief Minister also holds the Home portfolio and questioned women’s safety in the state. She alleged that while women’s security is politicised in other states, people in Assam feel unsafe.
