Four people were killed and eight others injured after a BEST bus ran over pedestrians on the crowded Station Road in Bhandup West late Monday night, triggering scenes of panic and drawing parallels with a similar fatal accident reported at Kurla last year, when a BEST bus rammed vehicles and pedestrians, killing nine people.
According to police, driver Santosh Sawant (50) was taken into custody immediately after the incident that took place around 9.35 pm. The bus that operates on route no. 606, between Bhandup station and Nardas Nagar, was taking a turn on the congested Station Road outside the Bhandup railway station when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it ran over people who were standing in a queue ahead. A lamppost was also damaged.
Videos later surfaced showed people pushing the bus to one side to rescue those trapped underneath.
Saimini Mudaliar, who was standing near the spot, said, “I saw the bus go at high speed and run over 12-15 people. After the bus was tilted to one side by those present, body parts were found below.”
Twelve persons who were seriously injured were rushed to MT Agarwal Hospital in Mulund and Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. Three women and one man were declared dead at the hospitals, while eight others, including seven men, are currently undergoing treatment.
Joint commissioner (law & order) Satyanarayan said that they will investigate if there was some mechanical error due to which the driver lost control over the vehicle or whether it was a human error. DCP Hemraj Rajput said that a technical investigation of the bus would also be carried out.
