The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has intercepted a passenger allegedly attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth approximately Rs 30 lakh at Amritsar airport during pre-embarkation security checks. The passenger, along with the seized currency, has been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for further investigation.
The incident took place during routine security screening in the Security Hold Area (SHA) before the passenger was scheduled to board a domestic flight to Delhi, with an onward international connection to Bangkok.
According to CISF, security personnel noticed suspicious behaviour during the frisking process. Based on the observations made during the screening, the passenger was taken to the Intensive Checking Room for a more detailed examination.
Foreign currency concealed inside undergarments
During the detailed search, CISF personnel recovered USD 31,500, estimated to be worth around Rs 30 lakh, concealed inside the passenger’s undergarments in the groin area.
Officials said the passenger was unable to produce any valid documents or authorisation permitting the possession or transportation of the foreign currency.
Following the recovery, CISF immediately informed the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, the agency responsible for investigating cases involving the illegal movement of currency and other customs-related offences.
Passenger handed over to DRI
After the recovery, the passenger and the seized foreign currency were handed over to DRI officials for further investigation and legal proceedings. Authorities are expected to examine the source of the currency, its intended destination, and whether any violations of foreign exchange or customs laws were involved.
