The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday said that The UniContinental hotel, which houses Habitat studio where Kunal Kamra performed the controversial standup comedy, did not have the permission to hold public gatherings in the basement.
After a video of the show in which Kamra takes a jibe at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was released on social media, Shiv Sena workers had vandalised the venue on March 23.
On Monday, the BMC officials had carried out an inspection of the venue without any prior notice and took the original blueprint of the property for further assessment.
The civic officials told The Indian Express that they are evaluating the present condition of the property with the original blueprint and have sought the list of permissions issued to the hotel from the Development Plan (DP) department.
“During our inspection, we noticed multiple violations in the property. For example, they didn’t have any permission to hold public gatherings in the basement. We have asked the DP and Building Proposal (BP) departments to give us a list of permissions that were given to them prior to operation. This list will be compared with the original blueprint of the structure,” an official said on Tuesday.
The Habitat studio is located in the four-storied UniContinental Hotel in Khar (West). Open mic events like stand-up comedy shows mainly take place in the basement of the building while there is an open air theatre facility available at the terrace of the hotel as well.
Earlier on Monday, the civic officials had asked the hotel management to submit a copy of all the maps and original documents at their possession to the BMC. Civic officials on Tuesday said that they are yet to receive all the documents from their end.

“We are expecting the documents to be submitted to us by tomorrow (Wednesday). After that a report will be prepared and the management will be given time to file a response of the violations. Depending on their response, appropriate action will be taken,” the official added.
