Yuvraj Mehta’s car was retrieved on Tuesday, four days after the accident.

A newly surfaced video showed the final, desperate moments of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who died after his car plunged into an 80-foot-deep, water-filled abandoned construction pit near his apartment in Noida. The footage shows Yuvraj Mehta sitting atop his partially submerged car inside a storm-water drain, repeatedly flashing his mobile phone’s torch for nearly two hours in an apparent SOS. The signals went unnoticed as thick fog and poor visibility hampered rescue efforts.

As the investigation widened, police arrested two more builders- Ravi Bansal and Sachin Karnwal- linked to Lotus Greens Construction Pvt Ltd. A case had earlier been registered against five builders in connection with the incident. Abhay Kumar of MZ Wiztown Planners Pvt Ltd has already been sent to jail. Police said action against those found negligent was continuing.

Yuvraj Mehta’s car was retrieved on Tuesday, four days after the accident, as investigators examined allegations of negligence, lack of safety barriers and delays in the rescue operation.

‘Timely Intervention Could Have Saved My Son’

The victim’s father said that quicker and more specialised rescue efforts might have saved his son.

“If expert divers could have gone in, then maybe my son would have been saved. Yuvraj kept crying for help as the car drowned,” he said. Another video clip shows rescuers at the site, with the faint glow of Yuvraj Mehta’s phone visible on the water’s surface through dense fog. Voices can be heard urging him to remain calm as teams struggled to reach him.

The accident occurred on the night of January 16 when Yuvraj Mehta, who worked in Gurugram, was driving home. His vehicle fell into a deep excavation near a construction site in Sector 150, Greater Noida. He reportedly remained alive for almost two hours while police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) attempted a rescue in foggy conditions.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government has begun probing the case. The three-member panel, headed by Additional Director General (Meerut Zone) Bhanu Bhaskar, visited the site and held meetings with officials of the Noida Authority. The SIT has been directed to submit its report within five days.

Forensic teams also visited the location to collect samples and measure the road and the adjoining drain.
