Delhi Police have registered a total of 10 FIRs across multiple police stations in the national capital in connection with the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protests, officials said on Wednesday.
The cases relate to various incidents reported during the demonstrations, including allegations of violence, vandalism, obstruction of public servants from performing their duties and violations of prohibitory orders. Investigations are currently underway.
FIRs registered across five police stations
According to police officials, the 10 FIRs have been registered across several police stations in the New Delhi district.
A total of four FIRs have been lodged at the Parliament Street police station, while three cases have been registered at the Connaught Place police station.
One FIR each has also been registered at the Mandir Marg, Barakhamba Road and Kartavya Path police stations.
Police said the cases pertain to different incidents that took place during the protest period and are being investigated separately.
Police allege protesters violated prohibitory orders
According to officials, the FIRs were registered after Monday’s protests in the New Delhi area allegedly turned violent.
Police claimed that despite repeated warnings and lawful directions, protesters refused to disperse and violated prohibitory orders imposed in the area.
Authorities further alleged that some demonstrators displayed aggressive behaviour, leading to clashes with security personnel and disruption of public order.
The allegations made by the police are part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigation focuses on violence and conspiracy angle
Earlier, Delhi Police had registered five FIRs in connection with allegations of violence, stone-pelting and vandalism during Monday’s protest at Jantar Mantar.
Officials said investigators are examining more than 250 videos collected from CCTV cameras, police personnel and other sources to identify those involved in the violence.
Police are also probing whether the incidents were part of a pre-planned conspiracy.
According to ANI, one FIR relates to the alleged unauthorised use of a drone in the New Delhi district during the ongoing Parliament session.
Another FIR pertains to an alleged conspiracy behind the violence, while two other cases relate to allegations of obstructing government work, assaulting police personnel and damaging public property.
Cases registered under BNS, Arms Act and PDPP Act
The FIRs have been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act, 1959, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act.
According to police, the FIR registered at Parliament Street police station invokes provisions including Section 223(b), relating to disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant or obstruction of government work, Section 221, dealing with obstruction of a public servant in the discharge of official duties, and Section 132, concerning assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from performing official duties.
Police said additional sections have been invoked depending on the nature of each incident under investigation.
Probe continues after violent clashes
The latest legal action follows violent clashes during the CJP’s “Sansad Chalo” march earlier this week, during which Delhi Police alleged that protesters attempted to breach barricades, vandalised vehicles and pelted stones at security personnel.
According to police, more than 118 personnel sustained injuries during the clashes, while around 60 protesters were also reported injured.
