Doctors verbally ‘fight’ over Ganesh idol installation inside Ahmedabad’s SVP Hospital | Ahmedabad News

Resident doctors had an altercation, involving alleged death threats, over a Ganesh idol inside Ahmedabad’s SVP Hospital, leading to an FIR filed in the matter on sections including criminal intimidation.

When asked about the incident, Saurabh Patel, the CEO of SVP Hospital, said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the hospital’s medical college’s Dean Dr Cherry K Shah. Shah said that the FIR had been rescinded as a compromise had been reached.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Kuldeep Joshi, the complainant in the September 4 FIR, stated that he was taking patient rounds at night when at 11.45 pm, he received a call from Dr Jay Raja saying that an incident had taken place in the hospital.

When he went to the ground floor, several resident doctors of NHL Medical College were gathered there, including Jay Raja, Jay Hathila, Marut Amrutiya, and Pushparaj Chudasama.

They informed the RMO that at about 9 pm, there was a meeting of resident doctors, regarding the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi and a blood donation camp, at the atrium on the hospital’s first floor when they received a phone call from former NHL medical college student Maulik Thakkar.

Festive offer

Thakkar had called about the Ganesh idol installation. He demanded that the resident doctors meet him in the hostel, but they refused, saying their meeting was underway inside the hospital.

He allegedly stormed into the meeting along with one Dev Padhi to tell the resident doctors that there “would be only one idol” and it would be installed on the premises. However, the residents disagreed, saying they would set up another idol of their own.

The FIR claimed that Thakkar and Padhi got very angry, and allegedly swore at and threatened to kill the resident doctors.

It was filed at the Ellisbridge police station under sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 296(b) (utterance of obscenities), and 54 (abettor present when an offence is committed) of the BNS.
