The Election Commission (EC) has turned down a proposal to accept the Madhyamik (Class 10) admit card as a valid document for voter verification during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal in 2026.
The commission issued an official statement on January 15 and informed the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal that the request had been examined but could not be approved. The letter was issued by the Commission’s Under Secretary.
The proposal was sent by the state election authorities earlier this month, seeking permission to include the Class 10 admit card as an acceptable document during the verification process. However, the Commission pointed out that as per its existing guidelines, the Madhyamik admit card does not figure in the list of approved documents.
The Commission referred to its earlier instructions issued on October 27, 2025, which clearly outline the documents permitted for verification during the SIR exercise in West Bengal. It stated that the admit card was not included in that list and therefore could not be allowed.
“In view of the above, the Commission is of the opinion that the proposal to accept the Madhyamik (Class X) Admit Card as a valid document cannot be acceded to,” the letter said.
