The ‘best of two exam’ initiative to “reduce the dropout ratio of students” is expected to benefit over 2.11 lakh students of Class X and XII, underlined the state government in Gujarat on Wednesday.
“This decision of the state government will reduce the dropout ratio in the state. The students who have failed in the exams or could not get good results the first time for any reason will get a second golden chance through the ‘best of two exam’,” an official release issued by the state government Wednesday stated.
In October, in a major relief to Class X and XII students, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) had issued the notification to allow all students the ‘best of two’ option across all streams.
In 2023-24, the state education board had given the option of ‘best of two’ for only Class 12 Science stream students where they could improve their results by appearing in supplementary exams conducted in the month of June-July. Between March, when the board exams are held; and June and July, when supplementary exams are held, they could improve their results by choosing the best of two.
However, in the notification issued in October, the ‘best of two’ marks obtained by Class 10 and 12 students was declared to be considered as the final. “This decision to increase self-confidence among students will benefit an estimated total of more than 2.11 lakh students,” the official release stated.
Students who have failed or obtained low marks in Class X and Class XII science and general stream will take the supplementary examination, the best result from the main or supplementary examination is to be considered and awarded a certificate. The decision will be applicable to students appearing for board exams in March 2025.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Developed India-2047 will be realised only when all children of the country are educated. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Education Minister Kuber Dindor and Minister of State for Education Praful Pansheriya, a decision has been taken in the interest of the students,” it added.
