The Bengaluru police Friday said they recently arrested six members of a gang involved in ATM thefts after finding two of them fighting over the spoils in a street. The police said the accused were employed as cash-filling agents, and they exploited their access privileges to pilfer Rs 90 lakh from the cash boxes and ATMs.
The arrested have been identified as Shivu K, 27; Sameer S, 26; Girish S, 26; Manohar K, 29; Jaggesh, 28; and Jaswanth V R, 27. The police seized Rs 43.76 in cash and a luxury car bought by one of the accused in his wife’s name.
The case emerged after the Mahalakshmi Layout police received information on January 25 that two men were fighting on the street near a tea shop in the Kempegowda Layout over a financial dispute. On visiting the spot, the police found that the men fighting were part of a group sitting in an SUV parked nearby. The police probe revealed that men sitting in the SUV had over Rs 43 lakh in cash. The police seized the car and money and took the men into custody for five days.
“The accused were interrogated at length. They were involved in filling and repairing ATMs through an agency. They were loading ATMs with less cash, and while repairing the machines, they used to get the passwords and steal money,” Police Commissioner B Dayanand said.
The police said the investigation revealed that Jaswanth had Rs 8 lakh in cash at his house while Manohar gifted a car, purchased with the stolen money, to his wife. Girish had also bought a car with the looted money, they said.
“The police seized Rs 51,76,000 in cash and three cars from the accused. The value of the seized assets amounts to Rs 90 lakh,” said Dayanand, adding that the accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
